Shanghai's Major-General The appointment of Brig. Alexander

Telfer-Smollett to be a local Major-

General at Shanghai is in accordance with precedent in other emergencies in Egypt, Palestine and Malta. The increased responsibilities made this imperative if Major-Gen. Bertholomew was to remain in Hongkong where the coastal blockade has brought the Colony into the war zone, with bombers flying across from the Pes-caderes.

Maj-Gen. Telfer-Smollett's new rank has given great joy in Dumbartonshire where he and his father, Col. Charles Telfer-Smollett are and were of Bonhill Born in 1884 he entered the H.LI. from Sandhurst and was posted to the 2nd Battalion in Edinburgh with subsequent duty at Fort George, in the 17th Brigade at Cork, and at Hamilton Depot with the old Lanark Mil with London as Madrid. Maj.-Gen. Armitage was France, with the Ist Division, and the Government Reds were Nosworthy's 2nd Division.
