London Comment on China's Stand in Shanghai There, a unit of Ulsters were enjoying some nourishment brought up by a transport truck. Above a heavy Japanese bomber droned steadily as it circled its solitary way, dropping One bomb per round trip. Taking no unnecessary chances the Ulsters entered the redoubt each time the bomber wheeled overhead. Outside on the road was the steady swishing of a street cleaner at work.
As that danger flew further west, the Ulsters came out of the redoubt to find that an ancient bearded Chinese had arrived on the scene and was sitting on one of the sandbags. His straggly gray beard jumped up and down as he told the soldiers in Chinese and at great length of his woes. Eighty-four years old, he had lost everything except the small blue bundle sitting in his lap.
