Like City of the Dead

Canton tonight* was like a city of the dead, although the dead are more fortunate than many of those who are still living, badly injured in today's air raids.

Some of the wounded still pinned beneath blocks fallen masonry ones which were being enacted in the -city tonight will be difficult to forget, among the most poignant being a dying mother, whose legs were crushed beneath a huge stone block, receiving water from her weeping son.

The bloodiest section of the city is the corner of Taihong and Wing-hon Roads, where a four-storeyed concrete arcade crashed on top of hundreds of Chinese who were seeking refuge inside.

Two bombs dropped dangerously near the Pearl River Bridge, depolishing the houses on the waterfront, together with their occupants.

Five bombs were dropped in the compound of the Saichuen Power House, but the Power House itself was not damaged.—Reuter.
