A Pretty Story

We are touched by the following little incident reported of the Chinese withdrawal from the Jessfield area:—

They did not forget to bid rather a pathetic farewell to the Britisn troops who had been their neighbours since the fighting was transferred to the western district. A Chinese company commander who had struck up a friendship with an officer in the Loyals took great pains t> search out his British pal, and shake him by the hand in farewell. Then, from under his greatcoat, he pulled forth in somewhat embarrassed fashion four hotiies of chutney, "Give these to your men," he said, "in remembrance of our friendship."

Of course, no one should look a gift horse in the mouth or a bottle of chutney in the cork, but it is interesting to learn that Chinese Army rations include such delicacies, Or do Correspondence In Parenthesis "Nortu-Cutna Dany News"

Dear old Schemozzler:

The tagging stems a severe blow to hand to one of your warmest admirers, Your reproduce tion of a dispatch credited to me by the "Daily Herald" interests me more than the rest of your readers. I hadn't seen it, as I get no copies of the paper her; All this—the "escape from death" and the "dramatic race from the northern war front" is as much news to me as to you.

1 inclose my original message for your perusal, and I trust you'll find it inoffensive enough. Alas I fear the "Herald" wanted a hero that day, and your correspondent was victimized. The anonymous dead weren't enough, somebody took romantic liberties with my report, and this is the diverting result. But as for shrapnel on the Bund, if you had put your head out of parenthesis that night you might have collected a souvenir within a few hundred yards of your right flank, Seems to me I remember a vivid story about one of your boys collecting some mementos on your own roof not long ago. To mollify your offended sense of death T am sending you herewith an embroidered square, to be offered as your next prize, Your holes, even equipped with zippers, are becoming snonotonous. If you want it TIN give you a slug of shrapnel to put in it. Cheer up, perhaps the "Herald" will manage to kill mz yet, before the war is over, Lovingly, Ep, Sxow Shanghai, Nov. 10 posi. Will you please send me your autographed S.—Will you please send me yi Dear Ed.—That sub-editor certainly did you dirt, but cheer up. A Manila paper killed us in a certain famous earthquake, which probably accounts for something, don't you think? No we can't send you a photograph, but you shall have a really good look at us one of these days.—LP.
