RUGGER ADVOCATED

Cliff Jones, Welsh International, Says Referee Should Put Ball into Serum London, Dec. prier the referee himself shan uld put the ball into the crum and thus end the eternal controversy over this question is the suggestion made by Cliff Jones, the Welsh rugby international fly-half, in his book "Rugby Football."

Jones says: "For various reasons scrum-halves find it increasingly difficult to get the ball into the middle of the scrum, and even if they do manage to get it in, the chances are that it has not been put in straight this may be due either to a sudden wheel of the scrum or to reason: which may remain unspecified. Certainly the referee has an intolerable job in this connection, and it might Well be a good thing for him to-put the ball in himself; there is a thence that he might then be able to legislate with some certainty with regard to the feet up' rules, though et the same time he wóuld have ta guard against neglecting the all-important task of making sure that the defending backs were not creeping up offside, Further, the scrum-half would be relieved of a doubtful privilege. At present he is blamed if the ball is not put in straight, though frequently this is due to the wheeling of the scrum. At least the scheme is worth a trial."
