FROM SHAMEEN

The first private cars ever to make the journey by road from Canton to Hongkong arrived here at 1.15 p.m. on Jan. 7 after a seven-hour journey from the British Bridge at Shameen, states the "South China Morning Post."

In the two cars, one owned by the Asiatic Petroleum Company and the other by Mr. V. E. Ferrier, were six passengers—Mr, A. Blunt, British Consul-General at Canton, Dr. R. 1. Lancaster, Mr. R. Y. Frost, Manager of the A. P. C. at Canton, Mr. H. J. D. Lowe, Manager of, Imperial Chemical Industries at Canton, Mr. A. A. J. B. Masseur, Netherlands Consul at Canton and Mr, V. E. Ferrier. During the afternoon the cars, decorated with Union Jacks, aroused great curiosity among passers-by in Pedder Street.

Mr. Ferrier, who made an attempt to travel by car over the same route last October but failed owing to the lack of facilities for crossing the Shum Chun River and the gap in the road between where it ended a mile or so from the border and where it began again inside the New Territories, stated that the trip had been singularly uneventful, though the road was by no means good in many parts. The journey took seven hours from the time the cars left Shameen until they arrived in Pedder Street, but this included much wasted time spent crossing no less than four rivers by ferries and finally Hongkong harbour.
