Japanese Official Ends Inquiries

Leaves Peiping for Tokyo to Report to Gaimusho Tokyo, Jan. 20.

Mr. Masayuki Tani, Japanese Minister to Austria who has been investigating conditions in north, central and south China on behalf of the Foreign Minister, Mr. Koki Hirota, left Peiping yesterday for Tokyo.

Widespread interest attaches to the report and recommendations which he will make to Mr. Hirota on his return.

The Peiping correspondent of the "Asahi Shimbun" predicts that Mr. Tani will probably advise caution in choosing a date for the recognition of the "Provisional Government of the Republic of China."

This regime, under an anti-Comintern and pro-Japanese banner, the correspondent points out, expects a readjustment of its relations with Japan. Therefore, he declares, the Japanese Government should give unstinted assistance to the development of the new administration in Peiping.

Mr. Tani, the correspondent believes, will probably recommend that Japan should ce-operate with the "Provisional Government" in the economic development of North China.

At the same time, he is likely to emphasize "the necessity of retaining room for a full play by financiers and businessmen of an enterprising spirit, although the state control of industries will be inevitable to a certain extent."
