"Some of them have been del at the dockyards for more than a year, while modifications have been carried out. These modifications have been concerned with the stability of the ships, and I understand that the Japanese have been forced to remove one of the main armament gun turrets to give them sufficient stability.
Thus the main armament of these ships had to be cut down from fifteen 6.1 inch guns to twelve. No amount of modification after constraction, however, can make these ships. so good as they might have been if properly designed in the first place,' Commander Edwards states.
Because of the great difficulties and the many failure ich the Japanese Navy is experi over the st lity of its ships, Commander Edwards goes on to say, large experiments being carried out with gyro-stabilizers.
"I understand that Japan is fit gyro-stabilizers to her two new aircraft carriers Hiryn and Soryu.
is determined to stabilize these he states. re of the opinion that the failures with gyro-stabilizers have been due to the use of gyroscopes of too little weight.
