Hopes for 1948 Tokyo, July 14.
Mr. Michimasa Soyeshima, a member of the International Olympic Committee, said the action was tantamount to cancellation of the Olympiad although a formal notice' of abandonment of the games has not-been made, "We regret the action," he said, "but apparently it was inevitable, We hope we can hold the games in Tokyo in 1948."
Indications that the Olympic Games fight not be held in 1940 were evident several days+ago when public groups pointed out that the necessary expenditure was too heavy for a time of national emergency: It was also reported that several essential materials for the construction of buildings would not be granted the Olympic Committee because of the greater need for them elsewhere. The reports intimated that steel required for buildings would be used in the cons struction of war materials instead, Sports circles predicted that Finland might act as hosts to the next Olympics because construction of grounds was already underway there.—United Press,
