More Air Lines in Africa

The Portuguese Government's de-

Cision to develop its air services Opens up important possibilities for Africa. The first route to be developed will probably be between Lourenco Marques and Mozambique, a distance of 1,200 miles.

Two further plans are being examined, one for a trans-continental route of 1,00 miles from Portuguese East Africa to Angola on the west coast; the other, to link Portuguese East Africa with Johannesburg by a system of reciprocal services.

After considering many different machines of different countries, the Portuguese Colonial Government decided to begin with two de Havilland Dragon-Rapide 400 h.p. twin-engined biplanes, a Dragonfly 260 h.p. twin-engined biplane, and a Hornet Moth 130 lip. two-seat cabin biplane—all hoot, economical and sturdy aircraft able to stand up to the rigours of every-day service in the tropics.

The two Dragon-Rapides were shipped to Lourenco Marques and assembled there. The Dragonfly hich has been modified for use as an ambulance, has already flown over ihe trans-continental route, landing in the eastern colony at Benguela and Lobito, which are coastal termini of the railway to the valuable Kafanga mines.
