Meanwhile, the situation in Shansi has become very critical for the Chinese in consequence of the continued success of the Japanese columns pushing southward. The Japanese troops who have penetrated into southeast Shansi have reached Tung-yang kwan, an important pass whose name in English is, ironically enough, the "Pass of the Rising Sun." This pass leads through the Taihan mountains to the plains of north Honan. Heavy fighting 1s going on there as the Chinese try to stem the Japanese thrust.
Two Japanese columns, operating with Changteh, in North' Honan, as their base, are pushing westward into south-eastern Shansi in an attempt to form a junction with the Japanese forces there. A Jepanese force, based or Wenshui, 45 miles south-west of Taiyuan, former ozpital of Shansi, has continued its advance and has captured Fengyang, 20 miles further to the south—west, From Fenzyang it has pushed southward to Hsioy!, ten miles distant.—Reuter,
