COUPLE of Chinese policemen, constables in the employ of the Ta Tao City Government, proved "friends in need" to two Germans, Dr, Ed: Birt and Mr. H. Tiefenbacher, in the Hungjao Area yesterday when they were Dr. Birt suffering injuries to his blow dealt by the Japanese with attacked by a Japanese soldier, left eye as a result of a severe a dagger. But for the presence of the two Chinese policemen, the "North-China Daily News" was reliably informed, the two Germans might have suffered worse injury, and the situation would have been even more serious than it was already.
The incident occurred at about 11 a.m., when the two Germans were out riding close to Hungjao Village, and were attempting to cross a wooden bridge near the village.
They were shouted at by the Japanese, and ordered to stop. Without any provocation whatever from the Germans, the Japanese dealt Dr. Birt a vicious blow in the face with his clenched fist, in which he was holding a drawn dagger, shouting at the same time "English pig." The soldier then attempted to push Mr. Tiefenbacher's pony into the creek, but did not succeed in doing so.
