ANGLO-FRENCH ACCORD A CORNERSTONE

Paris, Feb. 27.

Following a debate on foreign affairs, the Chamber of Deputies last night passed a, motion of confidence in the Government by 439 votes to 2.

M. Camille Chautemps, the Premier, in winding up the debate, was warmly cheered by the Left groups. He said that he refused to renounce collective security because the small nations would thus be sacrificed to the big. cross the bridge, they dismounted, intending to lead their ponies across. When Mr, Tiefenbacher was half way across the bridge, and Dr. Birt was still on the near side, the Japanese soldier ran up from behind, shouting at them in Chinese to stop.

The two men immediately stopped, and the next thing that happened was that the Japanese dealt Dr. Birt the ringing blow which caused his eye injuries. It appears that the handle of the dagger caught Dr Birt's eye, causing it to bleed, and half-stunning him. The Japanese repeated over and over again the words "English pig," which, apparently, were the only words of English he was able to utter.
