Mr. Hoover said the arrest of the three espionage agents to-day had interrupted a plan to lure several Army and Navy officers to a New York hotel under forged orders to bring with them "certain important military secrets" The espionage agents planned to steal the information from the Army and Navy officials after they appeared at the hotel, Mr. Hoover said.
Mr. Hoover said Rumrich was taken into custody last week as a certain "Mr. Weston" who had been identified as an employee of a "German Secret Service agency", "Mr. Weston" later was identified as Rumrich.
At the time of Rumrich's arrest, Mr. Hoover revealed, he also was engaged in attempting to secure 59 American passports by impersonating an attache. of the State Department. The passports were purported to have been intended for use by confederates to enter the Soviet Union to engage in espionage activities.
It was worthy of note that Donald Robinson and his alleged wife, Miss Ruth Reubens, now under arrest for espionage activities in Moscow, entered the Soviet Union with forged American passports. It was believed possible that they had been implicated in the same spy ring smashed here to-day. Federal agents said they were unable to confirm the connection, however.—United Press,
