Distant and Lonely Outpost

Jyekundo has been described by Gen, Pereira, Sir Eric Teichman and £|Madame David Noel, all of whom spent a short time in this distant and Tonely outpost. Young Ernest Schaefor, the German sportsman, made this his' base in the Dolan Expedition, and to this place he brought his magn'f-lent collection. It was from Lyekundo that Mr. Brooke Dolan set out to. reach Sining in Kansu. Col. Ku, the Chinese traveller and sportsman. now travelling in these parts, lived far some time in this forsaken place.

Apart from Tachienlu, Jyekundo is probably the most important trading mart-in central Asia. To this small trading centre come Tibetan merchants from all over the Root of the World. And at this point they come:

contact with the first Chinese traders. Several Tachienlu firms are represented at this lonely outpost. Here the Tibetan merchant tries discover the conditions that Tie head; if things are quiet in Szechuen, he travels south east; if conditions are otherwise, he proceeds to Kansu, northeast.

Jyekundo is one of the most important parting of the ways in central Asia: north to Russia; south to Burma; east to China; and west to India. Like Chiamdo, it forms one of the few doors into Lamaland.

It has now become famous world history as the place where Chosje Nema, the Panchen Lama, the Spiritual Head of Lamaland, the Grand Lama of Drashe Lhumbo, passed away. Three months ago it was 8 scene of bustle and life with hundreds of lamas, and hundreds of camp followers. To-day it is a small Tibetan village with a fow wild dogs, a number of ragged drabas, and a small company of Chinese musk merchants from Sian, in the province of Shensi, Jyekundo was also supposed to be the temporary residence the new Dalai Lama, a tittle child discovered by the Panchen somewhere in Amdo. It thus became: famous as the temporary residence of both the temporal and spiritual Iheads of the Land-of the Lamas.

The Value of a ady John Brown's Body and its disposal was quite a simple arrangement: compared with that. of the Grand Lama of Drashe Lhumbo. And the end is not yet, Report has it that the Tibetan authorities are prepared to seize it by force if any further fsttempt is made to carry the ady towards Tachienlu. Chosje Nema, Panchen Lama, number six, if the theory of reincarnation is accepted, {snot in the unfortunate dead body now being quarreled over in Kanaé

His spirit or soul, with all its accumulated wisdom and Intelligence, already dwelling in some bright little Tibetan boy in some part of the Land of the Lamas.

Why then wrangle over what is now merely an amply house: Alive, the Panchen enjoyed a monthly remittance of $40,000 or his following did, though latterly this was cut down considerably. The point now for his retinue to find his soul, as that is the thing of supreme value, as it was once asked long-ago: What. shall a man give in exchange for his soul
