Hongkong Trade Hard Hit

Front Our Own Comssroxonrr

Hongkong, Oct. 22.

British trade in Hongkong and south China fs already hard hit by the Japanese cutting of the Canton-Kowloon Railway and the closing of the river route to Canton, as goods from England and America are piled high in warehouses here, The Colony will revert back to a barren rock if Japanese occupation of Kwangtung continues indefinitely, is the opinion of British merchants here.

At great sacrifice in men and money, the Japanese are waging the campaign of death and destruction round Canton with the determination of shutting off British trade in south China. This policy has the inevitable effect of strangling Hongkong and. reducing its commercial shipping and political importance in the Far East. Another reason for the invasion is to deprive south China the yearly income of $380,000,000 being the remittances from overseas Chinese from British colonies and other possessions {in various parts of the world.
