At the Shanghai Race Club, y terday morning, the full grass track was made available for the early morning training work, Many spectators Were present and able to see some fast gallops done by ponies which will be racing on Saturday, as also by griffins which will be seen cut with the colours up in May for their initial official efforts.
The best griffin gallop of the morning was done by a blue dun in Mrs. Liddell's stable, which was out for a really strong 1% gallop with owner up, having Magic Eve (HM) to bring him home the last 1% mile. The grifün started off with his first quarter in 36, to do the full 1% mile in 3.25, last 1% mile 249, last mile 2.4, and last quarter 31, with quite a lot in him at the finish. He is game, will take riding, and certainly has speed.
There were many other griffins which put up good training gallops, though none that I saw equalled the blue dun either for time or style at the finish. Among the Cire string, there are certainly at least half a dozen really good ones, among them Cherrylight and Flyinglight who went 1% mile together in 2.51.3, last quarter 33.3. Another, named Handy-light, went a similar distance, doing the last mile in 219. Merrylight did his 1% mile in about 253 coming home with a good last quarter in 3125.
Some of the griffins in the Henchman stable went well A chestnut ridden by A. F. Clark went 1% mile in company, doing the last mile in 2.17.1, last quatter 312. A big grey in the same stable went 1% mile with Mr. Deeds ridden by H. Maitland. They did slow time but the grey came home well when doing the last quarter in 32.
