End of First Innings

After lunch, the Australians put up a brave struggle to save themselves from the necessity of following on, but failed in the attempt by margin of only six runs.

OReilly was bowled by Verity for 4 (284 for 9) and the innings came to a close when, with the score unaltered, Wall was out Lb.w. to the same bowler for 0.

Australia's innings had lasted altogether five hours and 25 minutes and, when it ended, the visitors were 156 runs in arrears.

The main feature was the remarkable bowling of Verity, who took seven wickets for 61 runs in 36 overs, 15 of which were maidens. All the time he made the ball spin land rise.
