Playing their first game of football in Shanghai, the Second Battalion, the East Surrey Regiment, bowed in defeat to the Lido Recreation Association in a friendly yesterday at Kiaochow Park. More than 4,000 spectators, nearly all Chinese watched the winners tally four sucebesive. goals before "the soldiers joved a whitewashing.
The score of 4-1 was rather flatter ing to the Chinese. In the second halt the Army took full advantage of the wind and attacked persistently. Weak forward movements and disorganized team-work enabled Lido to emerge victorious by a comfortable margin.
Harrison, left fullback and ¢aptain, played a sterling game. His col-Teague on, the right, Waters, was too unsteady and mis kicked on many Occasions, especially when playing against the wind in the first period. Parr, outside right, was the best of the forwards. He had a busy time as the rest of the team plied him with passes.
The chief asset of the East Surreys was their height and weight. Practically all the players knew the art of heading the ball and they used it to good advantage in midfield play.

The Chinese kicked off and immediately attacked, With the wind on their backs the five Lido forwards became very active. Chang was promising in carrying the ball up the right flank and Harrison was called upon to clear time and again. Lee and Kiang missed two glorious chances in the first seven minutes og they ballooned the ball.
In the 20th minute, neat teamwork between Chang and Lee put Van on the spot. The crafty outside left.stored with an angular shot.
A few moments later, after the kick-off, Ghah sent Lee through with a pretty forward pass, The latter followed Up, but he again Ufied the bell too high with only the keeper to beat. In the middle of the half "Shah missed an open goal himself after having beaten all opposition, He drove over the crossbar from about six yards out.
Lee came into the picture in the 32nd minute when he headed the ball into the net from a corner taken by Chang. He showed perfect timing to beat both Waters and Hurst on the jump.
The Army nearly scored in the 35th minute from a free kick taken by Parr, The ball shot at Loh, with three forwards charging in. The Chinese custodian gathered but before he could clear, Meng fell against him and the ball bounced off, Fortunately, Chang came to the rescue and kicked clea After the rest period the -soldiers attacked. In view of Parr's dangerous individual movements, Lee dropped back and inter-changed with Woo in an effort to blot the Army winger out. The plan worked effectively and although the East Surreys kept the ball in Lido's territory most of the time, they rarely threatened.
a few minutes time Lido increased the lead to 3-0. Woo received a pass from the right and dribbed past Waters, Hurst rushed out in an attempt to rob Woo but was unsuccessful as the Chinese cleverly tapped the ball into an unprotected goal.
In the 30th minute Woo tallied the fourth one for Lido. Rallying desperately with Parr taking up the centre berth, the soldiers stormed the Chinese citadel with renewed vigour. Eight minutes from the end McLarty dribbled through and worked the ball towards the goal, Loh vacated his post to block the angle. The raider crossed over. As the ball rolled from right to left Meng stopped it, He fell for Me-Clarty to score easily, Manchester November Handicap Call-over London, Nov. 24.

Ideal football weather blessed the occasion and a big crowd was already in the stands when the whistle blew for the opening kick-off. Although the closeness of the competition and ihe orthodox nature of the running plays prevented the crowd from enjoying much mad excitement, the sight of long-unseen American football uniforms lining up in familiar formations was a real pleasure for the American community and a source of interest to the large number of non-Americans in the stands.
The starting line-ups were:
First Battalion—Pasko, re; Shipley rt; Arnett rg; Guseman c; Baham lg; Zelenski t; Davis lo; Aikman qb; Walker lib; Barker lib; Goush fb.
