TELEPHONE RATES

'The letter from "N.D." referring (0 the charge made upon him for the telephone service to his residence off JDixwelt' Road recalls the settlement arrived at between the Telephone Company last year on the subject of telephone services outside the boundaries of the International [Settlement and the French Concession. [it was agreed that the rental payable to the Chinese Government Telephone Administration in respect of extra~ [Settlement subscribers should be lcharggg to the Tarift Revision Account whole system. The rent temporary and limited to a maximum number of persons and to a period with [Municipality of Greater Shanghat" hwtunicipal Gazette note of March 10, 1833, continued "which to the and lof 1993 was estimated at Tls. 14,200, the French authorities would not Jagtee that this should be borne part by subscribers in the French Concession." In discussion by the munieipat council of the International Settlement, however, the view was Jexpressed that it was not inequitable to require the extra-Settlement subscribers, who would benefit under the new franchise from the Chinese authorities, to contribute towards the additional royalty charge. If as is: suggested only subscribers outside the northern boundaries are being sub> Jected to this additional charge mat ters should be adjusted to seo that the burden fails fairly and squarely jupon all effected by this agreement Jof last year. though it would seem {that the' preiest of which the correspondent writes is Just a iit. too late.
