The experts, of whom there are many at Newport just now, were full of praise for Endeavour, while not belittling the fine sailing of Rainbow. Some of them declared, after the race, that the challenger showed herself io be one of the greatest yachts of all time and Mr. Sopwith a helmsman of the finest calibre. No tone was more pleased. with to-day's result than Mrs. Sopwith, who sailed on the Endeavour as a member of the crew. There seemed to be general pleasure among. the spectators (overwhelmingly American). that at last the British had produced a boat snd helmsman able not only 10 make a race of it but to give the Americans a beating in the "J" Class.
Both boats started with mainsail, staysail, and quadrilateral jib. AS on Sattirday, Endeavour was manag Ing to point a little higher than Rain-how, and she held a beautiful course, while Rainbow, though moving faster through the water, went out to lee ward. somewhat. Endeavour was and the mark-boat and made up time and distance by a really beautiful manceuvre. Everyone following the race agreed that it was proving one of the greatest contests in the history of the Cup.
