New Waterloo Bridge

The pictures of Sir Gilbert Scot's amended design for the new Waterloo Bridge, have been accepted by the London County Council Highways Committee, are really attractive and one has not heard one dissentient in the chorus of praise.

The essence of the design is that the northern most arch (there are five in all) springs from the side of Savoy Hill instead of the Embankment, and Includes in its sweep both. the roadway and a stretch of the river. Through this arch will be splendid views oth up and down of the finest reach of the river. The} great towers on the bridge are gone. as also the rather cubist steps from Embankment to bridge-level—a fea ture which future generations would probably have disliked but have been Unable to remove. Lastly, the main channel of the river will now be entirely clear of any pillar, a great advantage to navigators. The design Ig unquestionably attractive, and seems to have gained by the removal fof the extra paris mentioned, which, judging by appearance, were purely. fanciful additions, with no structural function.
