The cult of the breakfast-table is —we like to think—peculiarly British. It has good sense behind it in many ways. For one thing it makes you get up in the morning. What is there more exhilarating than the smell of good coffee and frying bacon, or a delicious kipper or haddock? Let this wonderful aroma begin to creep. through the bedrooms and no one would willingly lie abed longer—he would be so afraid that ~he might not get his full share.
