Britain Could Also

"Close Door"

Retaliation Against Acts In China Urged By "Daily Express"; Tokyo Comment London, Dec. 19.

The British Government is r ported io be advancing money to China so that the Chinese can-open their "back door" io British trade, while the Japanese are shutting off the "front door," states the "Daily Express."

At the same time, the paper declares, the Japanese insist upon en-lering the British market in the Crown Colonies by the "front door."

"The proper course for us", the "Daily Express" considers, "is not to open the back door in China for our goods to enter, but shut the front door in the colonies to Japanese goods, "We have the right and the power to do it, "Wheh the Japanese people are convinced that that loan to the Chiang Kai-shek regime is really intended as economic pressure by a powerful economic country, they would unite and the reaction would prove quite contrary to what America expects.

"The Japanese people would undoubtedly find new grounds for strengthening the proposed new order in East Asia.

"Personally speaking, I am not inclined to regard the reported loan as a political gesture.

When Mr. Arita was questioned concerning the British loan, he said the same remarks applied to it as to the American loan.—Reuter.
