1935 Pact with France

Alleged "New Situation" Claimed by Fascist Government Not Recognized by French Leaders

Paris, Dec. 23.

GEORGES Bonnet, the French Foreign Minister, received the British Ambassador, Sir Eric Phipps, v yesterday evening. It is understood that he discussed Italy's official notification to France that she no longer considers the 1935 agreements valid. The French view is believed to be that it is now for Italy to take the next step, "since France considers that the agreements liquidated differences between the two countries."

The reason for Italy's rejection of the Franco-Italian Treaties of 1935, as stated by Count Ciano, the Italian Foreign Minister, is that the Treaties did not correspond with the present situation.

Ratifications of the Treaties, Count Ciano is understood to have declared, were never exchanged, and the Treaties, therefore, have never become operative.
