Farnes Barracked

Gordon, who claimed the last four wickets, was the most successful bowler, with an analysis of five wickets for 103, followed by Mitchell with three for 75.

Mitchell, who opened with Van der Byl made a bright start against Farnes, who was barracked for making several of his balls rise, and Edrich, scored 30 in 24 minutes and reached his half century in 98 minutes.

Before he reached his 50, however, his colleague Van der Byl, was dismissed leg-before to Verity for only four (41 for one).

Then Melville, before he had opened his account, was the victim of a wonderful catch by Verity, who dived and rolled over to accept a chance off his own bowling (44 for two).

At the tea interval the scoreboard read 109 for two, with Mitchell 56 and Nourse 38.

The batsmen were very subdued efter the adjournment owing to the accurate bowling of Verity and Goddard and a well-placed field. Mitchell did not score for 50 minutes.
