Drastic Setback

"The setback in China proper for the first nine months of 1938 was rather drastic as a result of Japan's enormous military advances. Trade export for this period totalled only about $27,000,000 compared to more than $43,500,000 for the same period in 1937. If this level should be sustained for the full year, exports will total only about $36,000,000 compared nearly $50,000,000 for 1937.

Exports to Hongkong and Kwan-dung continued high and in the first nine months of 1938 the United States sold. goods valued at more than $17,000,000 to the British port, compared to less than halt this amount for the same period 1937. Kwantung bought American supplies worth more than $14,000,000 during this period compared with about $8,700,000 in the same nine months last year.

However, the fal of Canton and the complete disruption of communications between that city and Hongkong undoubtedly is cutting deeply into American trade with the British port. This has not yet been reflected in American trade statistics, but authorities believe the decline Will be drastic for the last three months of this year.
