COTTON, YARN, ETC, (Weekly report by courtesy of Messrs, J. Spunt & Ca.)
'Chinese Cotton: "Throughout the past week our market manifested distinctly weak aspect and prices were carried down $1 to $1.80 lower than that registered' during' the preceding period such being mainly due to the Influence brought to bear by the continued weakness displayed in the foreign markets as also by the potent factor of commitments having beet made by both Chinese and Japanese mills to the extent of 10,000. bales Indian cotton comprising Bengal and Oomra grades and also by Spinners' purchases of several thousand bales spot American cotton, However Chinese cotton of medium grades where-with 16s & 208 can be spun not available at cheaper rates owing to present lower spot, stocks and also owing to foreign cotton of similar grades being as yet unobtainable at competitive prices. A further factor tending to depress our markets the large quantity of stocks of Lingpfo cotton both spot and in the Interior marts, most of which are] under loan to Chinese banks, which Toans were contracted before the] Chinese New Year at higher rates fand og the values have since considerably receded a fair portion of which hag devaluated even below the Agure advanced against same.
Ags the dealers are not at present a position to redeem such loans the banks concerned have no other alternative but to endeavour in every way possible to liquidate their hold Ings. As the local market is too smalt to absorb such quantities partiularly at a time when the American staple is available at more advantageous rates they have resorted to hedge Ing same by sales in the Cotton Goods Exchange and which procedure has algo conteiputed tthe. declines now being registered. Tenders on exchange for March cotton have already been made so far to the extent of 5,000 piculs but buyers hesitate to take same up being aware that such comprises mostly Tientsin cotton which ig rather dificult to dispose of in the face of the very low prices. now prevailing in the Bengal grades.
Yarn: Prices receded by $3.00 to) $5.00 per bale during the past week which is ascribable on the one hand to weakness in the raw material and the other to the very poor demand fon the part of exporters who appear to. indicate that consumers in the interior marts have a suflciency to cover their needs for the time being. material damage to the growing native The Shanghai Flour prices are Jabout unchanged, and must be called very low.
