Relief Budget

Determination to Curb Big Spending by President

Washington, Jan. 8.

Powerful opposition to President Roosevelt's request for $875,000,000 emergency relief funds exists here today according to a preliminary rey of conservative Democrats and Republican Congressional circles where determination to curb the President's huge spending programme evidently was hardening.

Mr, John Taber, Republican Representative of New York, and member of the House of Representatives Appropriations Sub-Committee, declared that there appears at present to be only one member of the committee who will approve appropria-lion of the entire sum requested by Mr, Roosevelt.

Members of the committee were reported to consider $500,000,000 as the maximum which can be granted, despite an unofficial estimate that stich a reduction would entail the cutting of present Works Progress Administration relief rolls from more than three million men to approximately 1,500,000.

President Roosevelt's $500,000,000 emergency national defence proposal is expected to be sent to Congress on "Tuesday. Although opposition to the President's plans has been heard in some Congressional quarters, the defence programme is expected to receive approval.—United Press.
