Sorry Plight

"Overcast, with rain or thunderstorms," predicted Siccawei Observatory at 4.30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, and yesterday morning Shanghai awoke to find the weather pro-Fhecy fulfilled in much too satisfactory a manner. Brooding skies of the day before were even gloomier on Sunday morning, and all over town people were standing fretfully at windows, gazing out at a dreary Frospect and wondering what to do with another spoiled holiday.

The rain actually started to fall jate Saturday evening, the after-cinema crowds being welcomed by a drenching down-pour soon after 11 o'clock that night, A brisk wind gave hopes that possibly the rain clouds might be driven away, but it was not to be. There was still a fair amount of wind yesterday morning, and plenty of strong, driving rain that penetrated all but the thickest of raincoats and most duck-like of umbrellas, Sports were, of course, cancelled, impromptu events like games of basketball, squash, badminton and so on, and the cinemas, did a deservedly flourishing trade.
