The Police won the toss and the game started with an attack by the Naval forwards. Ward was called to clear from a forward header by Jones, after O'Regan had sent over a nice cross from the left wing. Play was transferred to the other end from the goal-kick and Wilkinson, from a deft pass by Sammy Greenberg found himself about ten yards from the goal with only the custodian to beat. His shot however, went over the "deadline" about fifteen yards from the goal.
The game was very equal, each set of forwards in turn getting the ball in in the goal area, but being beaten invariably by good full-backs. Jones almost put his team ahead when he met a perfect centre from Morenian, but in trying to control the ball and being worried by Willie Ward, he handled it, the situation being cleared by the resultant free-kick.
The Police were awarded two successive corners on the right, and from one of these, placed close in to the goalmouth by Woodley, the Police should have gone ahead, but Wilkinson and the goalkeeper jumped together, the winger reaching the ball but heading it over when standing practically on the goal-line.
