Mrs. Helen Hicks Hard, defending women's Western Open Golf champion, bowed on the 20th hole here today to the stubborn drive of sturdy Miss Beatrice Barrett of Minneapolis, Patty Berg of Minneapolis and Mrs, Opal S. Hill of Kansas City won their respective matches and were paired in tomorrow's quarter final round. Miss Berg defeated Mrs. Charlen Newbold of Wichita, two up, while Mrs. Hill defeated Mrs. E. R. Bury of San Antonio, 4 and 3.
Base Didrikson, former Olympic track and field star from Beaumont, Texas, defeated Betty Rotterill of Salt Lake City, an outstanding contender for the title, three and one, Service Wall, Chicago, reached the quarter finals by defeating Mrs. Hays Dansinburger, Rochester, Minn., four and two.
