Distress Behind Red Retreat

We were surprised to pass two dead. bodies by the roadside and hundreds jeansed terrible suffering and many families were so widely scattered it became impossible to trace the lost members. It is reported that the [Communists are in dire distress and making for the Tibetan grasslands. Their direction is northwest behind /Kanze and apparently they are mak-jing for Kokonor and eventually /Kansu and Sinkiang. There was some talk that they might turn south but this is hardly likely as by doing so they would get further and further from the armies of other communist leaders. That they will fight and work their way north is probably Jtheir intention but they will be following a starvation track and one on which the Tibetan soldiers easily can distress and harass them. There has been very bad leadership and if is not impossible that thie immense Com-Jmunist army may finally work out its own destruction.
