Retired Statesman, Businessman is Killed On Sinza Road; Friend Escapes Injury

M5 Li Koh-jih, better known throughout the Far East as Marquis Li, was shot and killed at.3.45 p.m. yesterday afternoon and died from four shot wounds, at 445 p.m. at the Red Cross hospital to where he had been rushed in an emergency ambulance.

A friend who was walking by Marquis Li's side at the time of the brutal attack, escaped uninjured and was still at the Bubbling Well police station late last night, assisting detectives in charge of the case, in finding a possible motive for the murder. Marquis Li was, as far as the police were able to establish in no way connected with any political faction, having lived in retirement for some years and devoting his time to the cult of Buddhism.

Marquis Li, who, according to investigating detectives under Det.-Insp. Tabrum, never left his residence except once or twice a week, when he went to one of several Buddhist temples, had left his home at 1130 Sinza Road at about 340 pin. yesterday, in the company of a friend, as he wanted to visit a physician residing on Gordon Road. About 30 yards from the intersection of Gordon and Sinza Roads, two men rushed up from behind and one of them drew a pistol, firing a number of shots at point blank range. Marquis Li sagged to the ground with one wound in the head, just above the left eye and three other wounds on the rest of the body. The assailants made good their escape whilst a policeman on point duty nearby, summoned an emergency ambulance which conveyed the victim to the Red Cross hospital on Avenue Heig, where he expired at 445 pin.
