STRATOSPHERE

Moscow, Apr. 5.

A height of over 24% miles, more than twice the altitude reached by the American record-holders, was! attained to-day by a Soviet balloon, which, however, made its journey into the stratosphere without a single person aboard.

The ascent was nevertheless of great value to science inasmuch as the balloon was equipped with an. electrical brain" which automatically flashed signals concerning the progress of the fight.

The signals showed that the bal-toon travelled at the rate of 15 miles an hour, and that the lowest temperature, 76 degrees below zero, was recorded when the sphere reached an altitude of 30,000 fee.

The balloon reached a height of] 130,000 feet, or more than 24% miles. This compares with the altitude of 61.236 feet attained by Lieut-Comdr.
