DANSANT IS ENTHUSIASTICALLY RECEIVED

Peiping, Dec. 9.

'When I first came to Peiping there were enough Scots here to join 1o-gether and give a Caledonian Ball of recent years, with such a dwine ling community' it has not been possible to do so, but every St. Andrew's Night nevertheless there has been some sort of celebration when our local Scots have celebrated in some form or other, This year Mr. and Mrs. Alan Hen-ring, who are well-known in Peiping for their lavish hospitality, gave a party on November 90. They had taken great pains to make it a real Scottish Night and had succeeded admirably. Their charming country house at Pao-ma-chang, in which they now live all the time, was beaut menu and their guests in dancing reels and in singing Long Syne." Altogether it was a very gay, afair which carried on. almost 'A heavy fall of snow did not prevent the golf match, Scotland versus England, being played the next day. Red balis had to be used and prob: ably the party of the previous night enabled the English team to win by the narrow margin of half a point Luncheon was put up by the Scots and of course there was more celebrating, so that St. Andrew' really lasted much long twenty-four hours, Both the British and French Guards have so many friends here that they decided to entertain them at two separate cocktail-parties. The first one was that of the French Commandant and officers of the Legation Guard and it was held in the reception-rooms of the Grand Hotel de Pekin. I don't know the reason but there is scarcely ever a Tea Dansant this city, s0 it was quite a change fo be asked for 530 and to be able to dance before dinner.
