Hankow, July 11
Following three days of rest, the Japanese yesterd continued their advance on Kiukiang which lies 200 kilometres south-east of Hankow They endeavoured to effect a crossing of the Po: ko and subjected Chine between the lake and Kiukiang to severe shelling but, according to Chinese militar circles, were not successful. Oth quarters, however, state that the Japanese have advanced a considerable distance and some reports even state that the town has fallen. That these reports are premature is indicated by the fact that telephone connection between Hankow and Kiukiang still existed last night, Chinese bulletins speak of repeated Chinese attacks on Hukow but do not indicate whether results have been achieved All is quiet on the north bank of the Yangtze because heavy rains have rendered manceuvres by either army impossible.
