Floyd Bennet Field, July 10.
Mr. Howard Hughes, millionaire motion picture producer and aviation enthusiast, hopped off from this air field at 7.20 p.m. eastern daylight time with a crew òf four men, planning to arrive in Paris within 22 hours.
He then will probably continue on a round the world flight, hoping to create a new world record of four days, reports said.
Ten thousand persons packed the air field to see him take off in his twin motor Lockheed monoplane, which loaded with men and equipment, weighed 25,000 pounds.
The crowd was silent as the big plane taxied along the runway but broke out into thunderous cheers when the plane shot into the air and sailed off powerfully over the field.
Lockheed plane was christened York World's Fair 1939" in a ceremony performed by Mr. Grover Whalen, President of the Fair.
