Berlin, Mar. 29.
Berlin like quite a number of ether world capitals, is suffering from a "woman problem.'
The particular trouble is that Berlin has too many women. The German authorities have made strenuous efforts to attain a better balance beween the two sexes but admit these attempts so far have failed completely. The number of women here, condemned apparently to lifelong spinsterhood, is actually still increasing.
Out of a population of approximately 4,000,000, Berlin today has more than 350,000 surplus women. According to statistics published by the municipal authorities here, that surplus is more than double what it was before the Great War. This phenomenon becomes evei harder to explain in view of the fact that the number of boys born in Berlin and throughout the Reich in recent years has exceeded the number of girls born by about five or six per cent, According to official explanations the surplus of women can be traced back to the large number of men killed in the Great War and to the fact that many men have been drafted away from the capital for military service and jobs of "national importance." Meanwhile the number of Berlin's spinsters goes on increasing—United Press.
