The fire which broke out on the night of March 24 in the N.Y.K. godown building on Whangpoo Road was one of the most spectacular seen in Shanghai for a long time. The flames, which were first noticed at 11.15 p.m., burned fiercely for several hours, completely gutting the building and damaging the adjoining one. Fitful tongues of flames and dense clouds of smoke rose from the mass of debris throughout the following day, despite the unceasing efforts of the Fire Brigade, who continued to pour streams of water into the gutted building (seen above).
