RED PROPAGANDA

A new form of Communist propaganda about China is being broad. cast in the United States. This is to the effect that, in reality, the Communists are out to oppose Japanese imperialism and that Mao Tee-tung's recent advance into Shansi was with the objective of reaching the northeast and attempting to drive the Japanese out of that part of the country, This is ingenious but unfortunately it lacks any foundation {in truth, The Communist leaders are not anxious to commit suicide. Mao fee-tung's campaign in Shansi—now fortunately proved to be unsuccessful—was probably inspired by a desire to reach richer regions than the poverty-stricken border of Kansu and Shensi upon which he had been so long encamped. There was also severe pressure from something like 85,000 Government and provincial troops being brought to bear on the Communist stronghold, and Mav took advantage of a strange tactical error by the Government commanders, 10 cross the Yellow River into Shansi. Both pressure and error com bined to give the motive for the invasion of Shansi, Interpretation of the rout of the Reds in Kiangsi, through part of Kwangsi, through Hunan "and Kweichow, __northward through Yunnan and' Szechuen, and finally across Shensi into Shansi, as a planned campaign against Japanese in the extreme north-east, incompatible with an intelligent study of the movements of the Communists from the time that General Chiang Kal-shek drove them from their original lair.
