Maj.-Gen. Blanton Winship, Governor of Puerto Rice, escaped a hail of deadly bullets fired by Nationalist extremists today while he and other officials reviewed a parade at Ponce marking the celebration of the American occupation of Puerto Rice.
Although the bullets meant for the Governor went wide of their mark they killed Colonel Irizarry of the National Guard, and wounded an officer of the U.S. aircraft carrier Enterprise; Sri. Miguel Mendez, Speaker of the House; Sri.. Francisco Dominguez, Commissioner of Agriculture; Senator Pedro Juan Serralles and several women and children.
Twenty Soviet infantrymen and 30 cavalryman, the Japanese dispatches said, penetrated into Manchoukuo territory near Shaopaling Hill, near Hunchun, yesterda; but were subsequently driven out by Manchoukuo border patrols. Exactly how the Soviet troops were ejected was not stated.
The news of the incident and the return of the two messengers, however, was completely eclipsed in the evening newspapers by long accounts of the fall of Kiukiang, the report of which was first spread in extra editions. These were sold by Japanese newsboys, who, in traditional fashion, ran through the streets with bells jangling, Although it is likely to evoke the usual protests by Japan and Manchoukuo, no great importance 1s attached to this latest alleged incident.
At the same time, the prospect of an amicable settlement of the Changkaofeng affair looms even brighter with a report from Changchun that Manchoukuo is prepared to consider the establishment of boundary commissions "if this is formally proposed by Japan."
Assailants Captured Ussuri Landing Reported One Nationalist was also killed, while other assailants who fired at the officials were captured by police and troops. They were quickly escorted out of reach of the huge crowd watching the parade because the spectators were in an angry mood over the outrage.
Despite the attempt on his life and the furore caused by the shooting, Major-Gen. Winship addressed the crowd of 100,000 half-an-hour later.
Three-hundred Soviet troops landed from four gunboats on the Manchoukuo side of the Ussuri River four di ago, and set fire to the village of Yaglintze, an unconfirmed report to the "Nichi Nichi" stated today.
Manchoukuo frontier guards, the report added, engaged the Soviet troops and, after five hours' fighting, repulsed them.
The number of casualties, was not mentioned in the dispatch.—Reuter.
