Captain of Club Captures — Cup Presented by Brig.- Gen. Macnaghten

The i Wheelers third annual and final meeting for the Torpedo and Brampton Cups were run off successfully yesterday morning at Kiaochow Park before a big crowd of spectators. Freddie Kwei, of the Public and Thomas Hanbury School, became the possessor of the Torpedo Cup while Miss Anita Chang captured the Brampton Cup as a result of having each amassed the greatest number of points during the past three meetings commencing from 1937.

The Police Cup, presented to the runner-up among senior boys, was won by B. L. Raymond Ting while the Zee Ching-long Cup fell to Miss Miranda Cheng, second best cyclist among senior girls, Cycling has had a long history in Shanghai, according to Mr. Kyat Tong, president of the Shanghai Wheelers. To Mr. Tong's knowledge, people in this city enjoyed bicycle riding as early as 1902. In those days only bicycles for ladies could be obtained. He remembered that Dr. W. W. Yen, well-known Chinese diplomat, was the first one to own a man's bicycle.

The most interesting event on y terday's programme was the Old Timers' Half-mile Handicap for members over 40 years of age. A. L. Biggs lived up to his position as captain of the Shanghai Wheelers by coming home first to win the handsome cup presented by Brig.-Gen. E. B. Macnaghten. He led his nearest rival, Mr, Percy Kwok, one of the most popular members in the club, by several lengths in the time of 1 minute and 48.3 seconds.

E. J. Berthet came in third amidst loud applause. William Hunter, a 65-year-old rider, also received a big hand from the spectators as he took fourth place.

Biggs, Hunter, together with Kyat Tong and Tom Beasley, are the only four local members who are associated with the National Cycle Union of Great Britain The Junior Half-mile Handicap for girls was won by Miss T. M. Wong, who received the Outhwaite Cup. Miss W. Y. Chow was second and Miss T. C. Liu third.
