The Smoke Problem

Brief reference has been made to the work done by the Shanghai Power Company in smoke abatement.

appears that $400,000 has already been spent by tke Company on equipment actually installed and in further investigating the possibilities of 2 satisfactory abatement of the smoke. Devices have been installed on bollers burning over 50 per cent. of the {otal coal burned which have satisfactorily eliminated over £0 per cent. fof fy ash and dust elements in the smoke trouble from these boilers. The coal which Is used in China has a very high sulphur content, and this ie one of the main causes of anal defeat of the Power Com-any's measures of abatement and the main reason for the difficulty in solving the problems. During the ast year, the: Company has been Active on the problem. It has reached tke point where actual development work and experiment on facilities for eliminating the nuisance from the bollers which now cause most of the trouble can now proceed. It is fully' aware of the inconvenience caused by the smoke and sulphur emissions; it anxious to do all in ite power improve matters and is prepared to 'g0 ahead as fast as its investigations and experiments indicate that the money spent on facilities for such abatement will accomplish the desired result and will not be wasted. 'The fact must be faced that in burning nearly 2000 tons of coal daily under present conditions satisfactory elimination of the nuisance is ex ceedingly die ult. Wherever the problem' is encountered, it requires 8 considerable period of time and a large expenditure of money to work. out a satisfactory solution. It is instructive to remember that the Bat-terse Power Station is reported to have spent no less than £800,000 in smoke abatement devices with vary-Ing opinions as to its success. This cold comfort for Shanghai residents, but it is only fair to the Company' that these facts should be made
