Department Officer

At a pleasing little function in the Reading Room of the SV.C. Club on Saturday at noon, Mr. ¥. George, Inspector in the Revenue Oftce of the SMC, was presented with two mementoes by his friends and colleagues on the ove of his retirement after 29 years of service. Mr. George, who first came to Shanghai in 1904, joined the S.M.C, in 1907, and now plans to leave in a few weeks' time for home, which in his ease means south-east London, fas Mr... V. H. Bourne, Deputy Treasurer-Revenue, in presenting Mr. George with a suitably-inscribed, 14- carat Rolex wrist-watch, made a'reference to his long service with the Council, He was unable to say much about Mr. George, he said, as he was one of those silent workers who did alor in a very inconspicuous manner. He would therefore quote from Mr. George's record, which would say all that they meant to say:—"He honest and hard-working employee of absolute integrity." In conclusion, ho referred humorously to Mr. George's state of bachelorhood, and ald that now ho had more time on his hands, he might find it dimeult to maintain this record.
