KING EDWARD'S BIRTHDAY

It fs highly appropriate and accords. with the relations subsisting between, His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen Mother,'that the chief honour in the King's first birthday Honours List should be the "award of the G.C.V.0. to Queen Mary, accordance with the new rule lnlely made by His Majesty for the admission of women to that Order. The Royal Victorian Order was founded in 1896 for the recognition of personal services to the then sovereign from whom the Order took its name. Its recognized as the Order on which the Sovereign draws in making rewards for selt_personi fore has gracefully made his mother birthday gift in making her the first Dame Grand Cross of the order. With the Coronation not so far ahead, it Is natural that the Birthday Honours List should be restricted. The four peerages are distributed among a great captain of industry, an eminent banker, u distinguished civil servant and administrator and an excellent politician-lawyer respectively. Sir Herbert Ausiin has recently made munificent donation to sclentifle research at Cambridge 'University. Sir Malcolm Bailey 1s a Punjabi but, with his dual Governorship in mind, it is possible to suggest that Lucknow rather than Lahore will plume itself fon the distinction, Two medical honours are of Interest: Lord Dawson of Penn—the late King's Physiclan—receives promotion to. Viscounty and Mr. Alfred Webb-Johnson, Kip-on, is knighted. Old friends in Mr. Adrian Holman and Commander Cxptain V. H. Danckwerts, figure in the List in reward for services rendered at the London Naval Conference. The awards of the Companionship of Honour to Me. J. A, Lyons and Professor W. G. Adams of All Souls are particularly gratifying. Mr. Lyons is an Australian of Australians who has risen to real heights of statesmanship, Professor Adams is on eminent educationalist before whom even statesmen have been known to tremble and delight in the" experience, so modest and engagingly mild has been the cortective applied to their error. Tt is pleasant to sce that Miss Join Batten Jolns Mrs, J. A. Mollison in the ranks of the Commanders of the Order of the British Empire. The civilian "V.C." goes to the laic Dr. Melly—a worthy tribute to a fine act of per-tonal sacrifice in the cause of humen-
