To the Editor of the "NomrH-CHINA DAILY NEWS"
Sm,—As a Hungiao resident I was interested in P.C's letter in your September 5 issue and I really think it is up to our Consular authorities to stop the distribution of inaccurate news regarding Shanghai. It is obvious the world-at-large ' is receiving inaccurate news and the following is an extract from a letter received in a recent mail from a nephew in Australi I have been some time trying to yet in touch with you. I did not think it possible that your home or business address would be any good as our newspaper reports led me to believe that nothing wap left standing im Shanghai.
From Hongkong, I received a cut ting from the "South China Morning Post" Tuesday, August 30, 1938. The heading of the article:
Shanghai Tense Japanese Outposts are Withdrawn Guerillas approach Settlements Clash Imminent and an extract from the article is as follows:
British residents are hurriedly evacuating Hungjao following veporis that 4400 to 5000 guerillas are massed in the area and that Japanese are rushing troops who are taking up Positions all over th" golf course.
Fighting is expected to break out at aly moment. Reuter.
Some days ago in one of the evening papers a statement was made that it was now necessary for all foreigneis, male and female, to bow to Japanese sentries while proceeding into Hungiao.
On August, 29 the B.B.C. Wireless informed the world at large that Hungjao foreign residents were evacuating the area.
