Face Cum Own Commsrowoex

Tenghsien, Sung, July 14.

Taishan is fast regaining its former popularity as an escape from the fheat—I cannot call it a summer resort—and being only a few hours ride from Tenghsien, its proximity adds a drawing card to residents here and some have already gone. We would mention among them Dr. and Mrs. Hayes who have just pass ed their S4th wedding anniversary trid also $4 years of China residence.

To those who are accustomed to the strong mountain chairs used at Kuling a description of ascending Int. Tal will be interesting. Miss Scott of the Anglican mission kindly acts as ald to the new visitors. So she had written that "chairs would be awaiting us at the station" which is Talantu. As we alighted from the train coolies were in evidence, but no chairs. On enquiring, our attention was directed to a queer object lying flat on the ground composed of ropes, short poles and sticks. "And we were Introduced to the chair.

When the coolies pick it up it assumes some proportions and a seat appears—tied to this with ropes and extending into space is a small board upon which your feet rest and swing. Sometimes you are carried crosswise and sometimes sidewise and when you arrive at the top you feel that you have been through a real adventure when you consider the hair breadth escapes through which you have passed.
