The recent statement from the Shanghai Municipal Council regarding the problem of smoke abatement was excellent so far as it went, but those who suffer under the infliction of the smoke pall which hangs over Shanghai are inclined {0 ask one oF two questions, Does the Shanghai Power Ca, carry the sole responsibility for the smoke which gives 30. much trouble? Figures on that point may be interesting. In 1935 Shanghai, consumed approximately 2,350,000 tons of coal. Of this the Shanghat Power Ca. consumed 527,071 tons, or approximately 21 per cent, The Council may be asked: What has Been done to deal with the 2,000,000 tons consumed by concerns other than the Shanghai Power Ca.? From the figures supplied by the Company itself it is possible to arrive at a more less accurate idea of the extent to, Which the smoke nuisance has. been eliminated in combustion at the Riverside Power Station, There are 4 boiler houses and during 1935 their consumption of coal was as follow: sem In regard to the boiler house consuming the largest quantity of coal, es" the Council's memorandum indicated, the Power Company has eat-ried out treatment which eliminates }85 per cent, of the fly ash and 91 per be- h ing die main causes of the public inconvenience, That is to say, from 61 per cent, of the coal which the Company consumes, the annoyance has been virtually eliminated. This leaves a balance of 205557 tons of coal Which have not yet been satisfactorily, treated by the Power Company, But it should be recognized that this represents only 8 per cent, of the total coal consumed in Shanghai, So even if the Power Company, which ts now engaged in experiments to that end completely eliminated the nuisance in the combustion products of this remnant, Shonghal_would still be confronted with 79 per cent, of its present problem, "To explain the matter clearly the following table may be useful:
