New Plants Opening in Distant Provinces; Bad Luck in Shanghai

Its large Shanghai plant destroyed in the hostilities, the Commercial Press, Ltd., once the biggest Chinese printing and publishing company, is making strenuous efforts to regain a leading position in China's publishing business by building new factories in remote south-western provinces, it was learned yesterday.

$1,500,000 Loss in 1932

The company's Shanghai plant, on Paoshan Road, Chapei, was first destroyed in the 1932 hostilities. It was conservatively estimated then that the material loss alone amounted {o more than $1,500,000.

When the 1932 hostilities ended and the Chapei area was handed back to the Chinese authorities, th company was able to repair its Chapei plant partially and resume operations in the plate-making and printing departments.

The outbreak of another major conflict in Chapei last year dashed to pieces all hopes for the rebuilding of the tompany's Chapei plant which was destroyed beyond repair soon after the fighting had broken out.
